We left Cooperstown yesterday morning headed towards Cincinnati and the first of our ballgames. Our route took us through Binghamton, where Toby will soon begin his college life at Binghamton University. Of course, we had to stop and check out the campus. It is relatively new (coincidentally started, like me, in 1946), and expansive. Lots of trees, and there even is a dorm called University in the Woods. It seems like it was just yesterday that we were in college, and now it will be our grandson. Time really flies. We stayed in Clarion PA, a town we previously did not know existed, and that we will quickly forget. But we realized how many small towns there must be in America, that aren’t “charming” like Woodstock or Cooperstown, but represent home and comfort to their residents.
Our drive today took us through Columbus, and we took the time to see the Ohio State campus, and the enormous football stadium. It is one of the most imposing stadiums we have ever seen.
We are now in Cincinnati, looking forward to the 4th of July, and the Reds vs. Cubs tomorrow. Downtown Cincinnati, where we are staying, is very busy, (lots of Cub fans seem to have made the trip from Chicago). It reminds me of the way Seattle used to be, in that that the downtown does not die when the business day ends. Our hotel is also a fine art gallery, right by the free streetcar that will take us to the game tomorrow. Looking forward to Great American Ballpark, which will be #20. And hoping to find a place to watch fireworks over the river.
